Origin of MamyPoko diapers

MamyPoko is a leading baby diaper brand in Singapore, as well as in other Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand and India. You would probably have come across its cute cartoon mascot, “Poko-chan”, with its songs and videos which the company claims can calm 96% of crying babies. “Poko-chan” is quite liberally sprinkled on packaging across the MamyPoko range, with such kiddish design and imagery standard practice in the baby diapers industry to better appeal to parents and children.

As with its fierce competitor Merries, MamyPoko is part of the portfolio of a huge Japanese conglomerate. Unicharm Corporation was founded in 1961 with business lines in building materials and subsequently, feminine hygiene products. The MamyPoko brand, launched in 1983, was in fact started later than its sister brand, Moony, which, while also relatively popular in Singapore, always seems to be in the shadow of its larger sister brand.

R&D and innovation are core fundamentals behind the company’s success, with operations in over 80 countries, including mega markets such as India where sales have seen exponential growth for the past few years. Over the years, significant innovations in baby diapers design have been testament to the brand’s expertise and efforts.

These include the launch of the world’s first crawler pants in 2000, as well as vastly improving diaper ergonomics in 2008 by halving the absorbent core thickness (without reducing absorptivity) while doubling the waist band stretchability of diaper pants, also another global pioneering achievement.

Today in Singapore, thanks to its marketing efforts and consistent market visibility, MamyPoko is a well-known baby diaper brand among both new and experience parents. Compared to other diaper brands, it also carries one of the largest varieties of diaper tape and pants, with different designs, features, functionalities and price points.

Let’s have a more detailed review of the different series of diaper tape and pants offered by MamyPoko in Singapore!

MamyPoko Air Fit Tape

First launched in 2013, MamyPoko Air Fit, made in Japan, is one of the most marketed series in Singapore. The tape version is available in sizes Newborn to XL. In addition, it is one of the very diaper brands in Singapore to also cater specifically to smaller or premature babies, with its “Preemie” size.

The most distinctive feature of Air Fit Tape, which is even illustrated prominently on the packaging, is how the contours of the diaper, including the absorbent core, have been designed to conform to the shape of your baby’s bottom. Whether crawling, sitting, walking or lying down, the so-called curve fit will adjust to the shifting shape and curvature of your baby’s bum and waist, while also reducing pressure on the tummy by up to 50%.

If you are wondering whether this will affect the anti-leakage design, fret not. The back stopper and side leg gathers are still effective in minimizing any leakages.

As mentioned earlier, in terms of diaper thickness, the brand’s research efforts have halved the absorbent pad without compromising on the absorptive efficacy. Despite being one of the thinnest tape nappies out there and the aforementioned shape-shifting flexibility, MamyPoko Air Fit Tape also still boasts industry standard absorbency of up to 12 hours.

That said, its claim of being the softest-to-skin diapers in Japan is perhaps a little self-aggrandizing, as it does not disclose its key ingredients beyond simply being pulp, polymer, polyolefin and polyester. Nevertheless, these baby diapers have been certified free of harmful chemicals by OEKO-TEX, and the latest iteration has olive oil extracts added to the back sheet for extra moisturizing effect.

Special mention is also given to the Preemie size, with the curve fit design going the extra mile to conform to the natural foetal position of many premature infants. Perforated lines along the sides also allow parents to easily tear off the diaper, without the need to manoeuvre or turn baby around to take off the diaper.

MamyPoko Air Fit Tape is available in the following sizes:

  • Preemie: 1.5 – 3kg. Available in packs of 30
  • Newborn (NB): up to 5kg. Available in packs of 90
  • Small (S): 4 – 8kg. Available in packs of 84
  • Medium (M): 6 – 11kg. Available in packs of 64
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Available in packs of 54
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 – 17kg. Available in packs of 44

MamyPoko Air Fit Pants

One of things you may notice about MamyPoko Air Fit Pants is its higher cut waist band. And naturally, a concern that will next arise is whether it will be too tight for your child’s tummy. Well, this has certainly been addressed, with the waist band’s stretchability, an important focus of the brand’s research, having been vastly improved to still provide a comfortable snug fit for your child.

The enhanced elasticity extends to the thigh cuffs as well, and is part of the gender-differentiated design of the Air Fit Pants. With the exception of size M, the larger L to XXL sizes are all tailored for boys and girls respectively.

The high cut design and improved elasticity make for a diaper pants that not only minimizes leaks effectively, but also boasts superior comfort for your child. It is suitable for overnight use with absorbency of up to 12 hours, and also comes with breathable inner and outer sheets for better air flow.

MamyPoko Air Fit Pants are available in the following sizes:

  • Medium (M): 6 – 11kg. Available in packs of 58
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Available in packs of 44 for boys and girls.
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 – 17kg. Available in packs of 38 for boys and girls.
  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 13 – 28kg. Available in packs of 26 for boys and girls.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Tape

MamyPoko Extra Dry Tape, also known formerly as Extra Dry Skin Tape, has undergone several iterations over the past 3 to 4 years. This series further demonstrates the brand’s commitment to tailoring its diapers to the unique needs of each age group, rather than merely replicating standard, cookie-cutter features across all diaper sizes like some other brands.

For the Newborn (NB) and Small (S) sizes, the top sheet is specially made of organic cotton, so as to provide that extra gentle touch to an infant’s relatively delicate skin. The large sizes from Medium (M) to XXL, while not wrapped in organic goodness, are still made of soft materials such as non-woven polyolefin and polyester which have been tested to be non-toxic for children. Nonwovens, with their micro patterns and structure, do not chafe or grate your child’s skin even with movement.

Another consideration specially for NB and S, albeit more common, is the notched design on the waist band, to protect the navel from rubbing and inflammation.

The Speed Air Wave technology, with the wavy top sheet, supports the fast absorption of urine and loose stools, so as to reduce the chances of the dreaded diaper rash.

Absorbency is up to 12 hours, and the all-round ventilation helps to keep the micro-climate down there as cool and temperate as possible, instead of the hot, sticky, tropical version of our macro climate here in Singapore.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Tape (including the older Extra Dry Skin version) is available in the following sizes, including mega packs:

  • Newborn (NB): up to 5kg. Available in packs of 76 and 80.
  • Small (S): 3 to 8kg. Available in packs of 66 and 68.
  • Medium (M): 6 to 11kg. Available in packs of 54.
  • Large (L): 9 to 14kg. Available in packs of 46 and 50.
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 to 17kg. Available in packs of 40.
  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 15 to 25kg. Available in packs of 32.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Pants

While the older versions of MamyPoko Extra Dry Pants (also known previously as Extra Dry Skin Pants) featured gender differentiated designs, the latest incarnation is unisex, unlike its Air Fit counterpart.

This is probably one diaper pants where you really don’t have to worry about side leakages. It comes with not one, not two, but three side gathers to keep even huge blowouts in place, without hindering your child’s leg movement.

It comes with the same Speed Air Wave technology with absorbency of up to 12 hours, though its air flow design could perhaps be improved further, with some parents reviewing that it retains a stronger urine smell than the Air Fit pants.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Pants (including the older Extra Dry Skin version) are available in the following sizes:

  • Medium (M): 7 to 12kg. Available in packs of 48.
  • Large (L): 9 to 14kg. Available in packs of 38.
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 to 17kg. Available in packs of 32.
  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 15 to 25kg. Available in packs of 26.
  • Extra Extra Extra Large (XXXL): 18 to 35kg. Available in packs of 14 for boys and girls (older Extra Dry Skin version).

MamyPoko Japan Version (Doraemon/Mickey Mouse)

Many parents give Japanese diapers the thumbs up because of their quality and reliability, but many also seem to have a fetish over their cuteish designs and packaging.

No wonder that the domestic Japanese version of MamyPoko tape and pants is such an evergreen series here in Singapore. Doraemon and Disney’s Mickey Mouse are 2 of the most recognizable, popular, nostalgic cartoon characters, and one suspects that the character prints on the diapers are as much of a draw as the diapers themselves.

Because in terms of diaper features and functionalities such as absorbency (up to 12 hours), breathability, comfort, stretchability and leak protection, the domestic Japanese version is really no different from other series such as Extra Dry.

MamyPoko Japan Version is sold in the following sizes for diaper tape and pants:

  • Medium (M): 6 – 11kg. Available in packs of 64
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Available in packs of 54

  • Medium (M): 6 – 11kg. Available in packs of 58
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Available in packs of 44
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 – 17kg. Available in packs of 38
  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 15 – 25kg. Available in packs of 26

MamyPoko Kids Pants

Children are usually fully potty-trained by 5 to 6 years old. However, accidents still do happen, and kids of primary school age still wetting their beds now and then is not that uncommon.

MamyPoko Kids Pants are hence designed for kids who are well into primary school. With older kids, there is a greater need for gender differentiation in the diaper design, something that MamyPoko thankfully recognizes as well. Even the Disney character prints on the diaper pants are customized based on gender: cars for boys and princesses for girls.

These night pants come in only 2 sizes, XXL and XXXL, with powerful absorbency of up to 8 glasses of urine, equivalent to 560ml for XXL and 640ml for XXXL.

Even in older children, diaper rash can still flare up intermittently, particularly for sensitive skin or with variations in weather conditions. Hence the breathability and softness of these pants is not compromised, with air circulation through the waist band and leg cuffs.

The main materials also remain identical to those in other series, such as pulp, polymer, nonwoven polyolefin and polyester.

MamyPoko Kids Pants are available in the following sizes:

  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 15 – 25kg. Available in packs of 30 for boys and girls.
  • Extra Extra Extra Large (XXXL): 18 – 35kg. Available in packs of 10 for boys and girls.

MamyPoko Standard Pants

MamyPoko Standard Pants is the most budget-friendly series of the brand in Singapore. But do not be fooled by the price tag; these pants certainly hold their own against other options in the market. Our child was wearing this for over 2 years, and the pants proved reliable even for overnight use, as well as keeping diaper rash at bay. In other words, these Standard Pants actually represent tremendous value for money.

It is not hard to see why, with these pants featuring the core technology and design from other MamyPoko diapers. The absorbent pad quickly and evenly pulls in urine, and can last for up to 10 hours (al right, not as long as the 12 hours of the other more expensive MamyPoko series, but still very decent nonetheless).

The triple fit design helps to prevent sagging even when the diaper is full, and secure the pants firmly but comfortably around your child’s waist. It’s also as easy as the other MamyPoko pants to put this on your child, either standing up or lying down.

The only gripe we had was that these pants do not come with a back tape, which makes disposal a tad more difficult.

MamyPoko Standard Pants may be cheaper, mainly due to being manufactured in lowest cost countries such as Indonesia and Thailand (while still maintaining Japan quality), but it still packs a punch in terms of the price quality relationship.

PS: It is also one of the very few diaper pants to offer Small size.

These pants are available in the following sizes:

  • Small (S): 4 – 8kg. Available in packs of 58.
  • Medium (M): 7 – 12kg. Available in packs of 66 and 70.
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Available in packs of 52 and 56.
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 – 17kg. Available in packs of 30, 44 and 48.
  • Extra Extra Large (XXL): 15 – 25kg. Available in packs of 36 and 40.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Protect Tape

Japanese diaper brands are the only ones we have come across that consistently experiment with infusing diapers with scent-based technologies, whether it is for deodorizing or indeed, pest control.

MamyPoko Extra Dry Protect Tape is the world’s first anti-mosquito diapers, and it could yet prove especially popular in tropical places such as Singapore, where mosquito-borne diseases are endemic.

As part of this anti-mozzie technology patented in Japan, microcapsules of lemongrass extract, a popular mozzie repellent, are embedded inside the adhesive tape of the diapers. After wearing the diapers for your child, you simply need to rub the adhesive tape gently to release the lemongrass scent, and scratch the tape further for a stronger scent. It works the same as your typical anti-mosquito patch, and can last for up to 6 hours. Even when worn underneath clothing, the scent is still effective.

For those who may be worried about any adverse effects on your child, lemongrass is generally considered safe for babies even with contact, and the extract is not in direct contact with your child’s skin. Apart from lemongrass, these nappies do not contain other chemicals or substances such as DEET and alcohol.

While other features such as Speed Air Wave and all-round air flow are the same as other MamyPoko products, the MamyPoko Extra Dry Protect Tape also comes with an extra bonus – 20% higher absorbency than other series.

These anti-mosquito diapers are sold in the following sizes:

  • Medium (M): 6 – 11kg. Sold in packs of 50.
  • Large (L): 9 – 14kg. Sold in packs of 42.
  • Extra Large (XL): 12 – 17kg. Sold in packs of 36.

Do MamyPoko diapers have an expiry date?

MamyPoko diaper tape and pants are usually best used within 3 years of the manufacturing date. If cases of prolonged storage, there may be discoloration of the wetness indicator strip. This could be due to exposure to ambient moisture, even for unopened packages. Even so, this does not affect the efficacy of the diapers, nor does it pose any safety concern for your child.
